Background

At 10:17 p.m. George and Brownie Petyak saw a bright yellow star-like light at about 65° elevation to the east of Kernville, California. It was later joined by a second similar object that appeared to try to “steer” the first onto a “definite course”; through binoculars the first object appeared bright blue. In an independent observation, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in the Mojave Desert located an object visually and/or on radar to the west over Walker Pass (about 20 miles) and reported it to Edwards AFB, so the visual sighting lines intersected from opposite directions. A controller at Edwards using RAPCON radar (or the FPS-35 search radar at Boron AFS) confirmed the China Lake report but tried to dismiss the 115 mph target as civil aircraft; the Kernville witnesses phoned the Boron AFS ADC radar site during their sighting. Project Blue Book questioned the date because the questionnaire sent to the Petyaks used military (Zulu) time instead of local time. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
