Background

At 1:30 a.m., on a section of the A338 (now B3347) south of Sopley, Hampshire, England, truck driver Karl Farlow (or Barlow) found that the lights on his diesel truck had failed. As he pulled over he saw a glowing, 15-foot-wide, egg-shaped object move slowly across the road from right to left, then speed up and disappear; it glowed vivid green, sounded like a refrigerator and smelled like a drill boring through wood. Before it left, a Jaguar coming the other way stalled and its lights failed, while the diesel engine kept running. Farlow and the Jaguar's driver, a veterinary surgeon, called police from a nearby call box; they noted marks on the ground and that the road surface seemed to have melted, and the veterinarian's passenger was taken to hospital in shock. A week later Farlow noticed that a 200-foot stretch of road at the site had been resurfaced and the call box repainted. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
