Background

At 3:24 a.m. on January 17, 1969, Roman Keith Lupton, a NASA employee at Langley Research Center, was awakened in his home at Crittenden, Virginia, by a loud hum like an electrical transformer going bad. Looking out the window, he saw an elliptical object about 30 feet wide flying 100 feet above the ground. Around its base was a ring of rectangular amber-lighted windows, one of which blinked in time with changes in the pitch of the hum. The object rocked gently as it moved, made a slow turn to the west and faded from sight. Blue Book investigators tried to convince him that he had seen a helicopter, but there was no evidence of air traffic that night; they labeled the sighting 'unidentified', the last report so designated in the Blue Book files. The entry cites Sparks (p. 342), the Newport News Daily Press of January 18, 1969, and Kevin D. Randle's The UFO Casebook (pp. 135 to 138). The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
