Background

At 9:35 p.m. Vernon L. Kleman and other Coast Guardsmen on the southern shore of Lake Michigan observed several multicolored, maneuvering lights moving at various speeds around Michigan City and Gary, Indiana, and Calumet City and Chicago, Illinois. At 10:15 p.m. Kleman and three other Coast Guardsmen at Michigan City saw a brilliant white object over the lake with an apparently rotating rim and red, green and yellow lights around its center; after a minute it diminished in size and brilliance and vanished. At one point a similar object entered the water for 4 to 5 seconds and then travelled straight up at great speed. Michigan City police officers Lance M. Hilberg and Tony C. Ragle and Port Authority police officer Robert G. Howington also watched 9 to 10 objects over about 2 hours. The Chicago Coast Guard Station confirmed that no known aircraft were in the area. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
