Background

During the day two boys independently observed a metallic object with an orange glow flying over Dennis, Massachusetts. It descended and disappeared behind trees, looking as if it was about to fall into Scargo Lake. One boy saw a hole in the ice on the lake, with steam rising from it and the water in the hole looking agitated. NICAP investigator Walter N. Webb visited the lake on January 10 and reported that the hole 'was formed by a rather sudden melting process'. NICAP's UFO Investigator reported on the case and the search, hampered by bad weather, through 1971 and 1972. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
