Background

The Talala couple were drinking coffee when they saw a brilliant light, about 33 feet in diameter, approaching against the wind from the lake outside their home at Saapunki. Their electricity went off briefly, and through the window they saw the yard bathed in light from a huge fireball about 60 feet away, which rose and disappeared after a few seconds. Around 8:30 a.m. their son Timo noticed a spot of hard green ice not covered with snow; Mauno melted some into dark green water. The melted area was about 20 by 10 feet, with finger-sized ice needles topped by ice balls and some soot. The next day he told the newspaper, which sent a photographer, and UFO researchers from Oulu took samples and measured radiation on 6 January, with ambiguous results. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
