Background

At 1:45 a.m. on March 29, 1974, a French vacationer and a local female friend were lying on a sloping beach near Lomé, Togo, when they heard a high-pitched whine and saw an unlighted cylindrical object above the ocean. It approached on a level flight path and stopped about 500 feet away, and within moments a tidal wave washed over the two witnesses, followed by wave after wave while they held on to a nearby tree. The object emitted powerful beams of light, and the Frenchman saw the water parting in a deep trough. The two remained paralyzed for 20 minutes until the object turned off its lights and flew out to sea, after which the water surface returned to normal. Over the next few days the man felt strangely exhausted and had a ringing in his ears. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
