Landévennec, France: Family sees string of glowing spheres on road, ferns found wilted
At 7:00 p.m. on 20 May 1974, baker Le Meur and his family saw a string of 7–8 glowing spheres about 3 feet above a road near Landévennec, Finistère; gendarmes later found wilted ferns and sent samples to a Paris laboratory.
Background
At 7:00 p.m., a baker named Le Meur, with his wife and two children, was driving on a small road toward Landévennec, Finistère, France, when they noticed a powerful light ahead at ground level. It consisted of a horizontal string of 7–8 spheres, each about one foot in diameter, about 3 feet above the road. Le Meur turned around and reported it to the Gendarmerie station in Telgruc-sur-Mer. Gendarmes examined the site the next day, found a patch of abnormally wilted ferns and sent plant and soil samples to a laboratory in Paris; the brown ferns were found to lack chlorophyll, and chromatography under ultraviolet light showed an unknown element indicating pheophytins associated with chlorophyll degradation.
