Background

At 9:23 p.m. science teacher Ed Handley was washing his car in his driveway in San Jose when he saw a light moving slowly against the darkening southwestern sky. It suddenly made a right-angle turn and headed toward him, emitting a light beam, took about 10 minutes to reach him and stopped about 100 feet overhead. Handley's mother and five members of a neighboring family also saw the object: disc-shaped, about 90 feet in diameter, with a cabin-like structure on top, a white beam pointing outward and moving up and down in a small arc, an orange glow around its edges and red sparks dropping from the underside that disappeared after falling about 6 feet. It hovered about 5 minutes, then oscillated and shot straight up, shrinking to a point of light and vanishing within seconds.
