Background

At night, witnesses in Medford, Minnesota, including Helen Kay, saw a brilliant orange-red light go behind a building, where they suspected it had landed. At the spot they found a bare patch 12 feet square of burned grass and ashy residue. Some distance away they saw a red ball of light above the trees and tried to catch up with it by car, but it eluded them. Soil samples were sent to geologist Edward J. Zeller at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, whose thermoluminescence analysis gave normal readings at the center of the trace but severely elevated readings at the edges. Zeller suspected the edges had been exposed to hard ionizing radiation but considered this not conclusive. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
