Background

At 9:10 p.m. Larry and Mary Ellen Masters, their friends Leighton and Tedra Middleton and three children were having an oyster roast at the Masters' farm off State Highway 13 in St. Johns County, Florida, when they noticed what looked like a large house on fire below the tree line about a mile away. A large dome-shaped object with bright amber lights radiating from many rows of windows rose above the trees, hovered for several minutes, sank back, rose again with three rows of lights and finally went down while its lights switched off. Tedra Middleton called the St. Johns County Sheriff's Department, the two men drove toward the object and then brought in a nearby agricultural spray helicopter, which searched the area within 15 minutes but saw nothing. Units of the Florida Highway Patrol and the St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam County sheriff's departments searched that night and the next day without finding anything unusual. At 9:15 p.m. Donna Scanton and four family members also saw a large circle of bright fire-colored lights above the house, which went out abruptly. The case was reported by the Tampa Tribune, the APRO Bulletin and NICAP's UFO Investigator. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
