Background

At 8:08 p.m. a young woman watching television at her home in Rives, Isère, France, saw a bright light outside and called her father. From their balcony they watched an intense white light speed across the sky from northwest to southeast and disappear in the mountains; the father thought it was spinning. At the same time a French physicist driving 7 miles away near Voreppe saw a luminous disc brighter than the full moon, white in the center, bluish-white at the edge and surrounded by an intense green halo, and stopped his car to watch. The object moved silently southeast, stopped for a few seconds and moved off 30° from its previous course at much greater speed, passing in front of the Massif du Taillefer before disappearing behind Mont Néron. The sighting lasted 20–25 seconds. Jacques Vallée included the case in his 1998 estimates of the optical power output of unexplained aerial objects in the Journal of Scientific Exploration. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
