Salto, Uruguay: Glowing disc over dairy barn, rancher injured and his dog dies days later
At 4:00 a.m. on 18 February 1977, rancher Angel Maria Tonna near Salto, Uruguay, saw a glowing disc hover over his barnyard after the lights failed; he felt shock, heat and paralysis, and his dog, which had faced the object, died three days later.
Background
At 4:00 a.m., rancher Angel Maria Tonna was herding cows to his milking shed near Salto, Uruguay, when the generator-powered building lights went off. Investigating a bright light at the east end of the barn, he saw a hovering disc like two plates facing each other, which rocked, broke off tree branches and, glowing bright orange, stopped about 20 feet above the ground next to a water tank, lighting the whole barnyard. His dog ran toward it, then sat down about 15 feet away and howled. Tonna saw six lightning-like beams from the object and felt electric shock, intense heat and paralysis before it turned red and accelerated out of sight; the generator ran again but produced no electricity because the wires were burned out. Investigators found broken trees and a 35-foot circle of burned grass with three circular impressions in a triangle; Tonna had severe skin irritation on his right arm, and the dog stopped eating and died three days later at the spot where it had howled, a veterinarian's autopsy finding evidence of extreme internal heating.
