Long Grove, Illinois: Four adults watch white tapered rectangle move in a spotlight beam

At 10:40 p.m. on March 9, 1977, four adult witnesses in Long Grove, Illinois, were drawn outside by a loud crackling noise. Searching with a powerful spotlight, they saw an object about 60° up in the northern sky, roughly 1,000 feet high. It was a white, tapered rectangle with a black silhouette behind it, about the size of the full moon. They watched it maneuver within the spotlight beam on and off for 30 minutes until it vanished within the beam, and the noise stopped at once. The account follows the entry in George M.
