Chanute AFB, Illinois: Staff sergeant tracks rotating rectangular object by telescope
At 10:15 p.m. on October 13, 1977, S/Sgt Steven N. Haidinger, observing the moon from his backyard at Chanute AFB near Rantoul, Illinois, followed a slowly moving rectangular object with his telescope.
Background
S/Sgt Steven N. Haidinger was looking at the moon through his telescope in his backyard at Chanute AFB (now closed) when he heard what sounded like wind passing around a building and looked straight up. About 500 feet up, an object was moving slowly from the west-northwest, and he trained his telescope on it. It looked rectangular, about 150 feet long and 10 feet across, with small square indentations in patterns along its sides, and it rotated about once every 2 seconds as it moved. It moved out of sight in about 12 minutes. He described the sighting in a letter to the CUFOS Associate Newsletter in 1981. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
