Background

At 3:32 a.m., police officer Manuel J. Amparano was on the outskirts of Kerman, California, when he saw a reddish glow ahead and, getting closer, an oval-shaped object smaller in apparent size than the full moon hanging silently in the sky; it was a very bright crimson-red that did not hurt his eyes. It shot out a beam of blue light similar to a camera flash, then receded and was gone. Amparano felt a tingling sensation as he drove to the station, where six witnesses noted that he was sunburned 'as red as a lobster'; the redness lasted about four hours, even under his uniform, but not where the car door had shielded him or on his back, which faced away from the window. Burns on his arms, face and neck were noted at Fresno Community Hospital and remained visible for two days, and the next day 'fever blisters' broke out on his face and arms for a week. Allegedly, doctors told the officer that the burns looked like they had been caused by microwave radiation. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
