At 5:30 p.m., Alejandro Hernández and his 12-year-old son Mario were parked on a dirt road in the Quebrada de Macul ravine southeast of Santiago, Chile, when they saw a bright object with red and yellow lights moving south at high speed and low altitude. It stopped directly above their Chevrolet Malibu, a kind of hatch opened underneath, and the car vibrated and rose into the craft. Mario passed out, while Alejandro said he was greeted by human-looking figures who spoke Spanish in a firm voice with a metallic sound and gave him an important, deeply spiritual message that he refused to share. Some witnesses allegedly saw the car, with father and son inside, descend to the road afterward. Las Últimas Noticias in Santiago reported the case on 26 September 1978.
