Background
In Moscow, Russian ufologist Vladimir G. Azhazha was elected president of a new section of the A. S. Popov Scientific Society for Radio, Electronics, and Communications titled Search for the Extraterrestrial Civilizations in the Neighborhood of the Earth by Means of Electronics. The department was disbanded on December 12, but its members, who also included Lev M. Gindilis and Nikita A. Schnee, tried to establish an official investigation of the UFO phenomenon. Eberhart cites Nikita A. Schnee's article on ufology in the USSR in Flying Saucer Review (1981). The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
