On August 29, 1979, at 2:00 a.m., Russ Johnson, driving on Highway 50 on the western outskirts of Vermillion, South Dakota, saw a blinding light that stood still for two seconds, then streaked toward his car and engulfed it; the car skidded and spun sideways.

At 2:00 a.m. Russ Johnson was driving on Highway 50 on the western outskirts of Vermillion, South Dakota, when he saw a blinding headlight in front of him. It was stationary for 2 seconds, then streaked toward him and engulfed his car. Johnson closed his eyes and hit the brakes; the car skidded to a stop, spinning sideways until it faced east. When he opened his eyes he saw the light heading away to the west. The next day the still-shaken Johnson went to the site with Robert Adams of the University of South Dakota, who saw the skid marks.
