Background
Between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. on June 14, 1980, a flurry of UFO sightings by numerous witnesses, including airport personnel and meteorologists, took place in Córdoba, at Jorge Newbery and Ezeiza airports in Buenos Aires, and in Rosario, Argentina, with extensive newspaper coverage. Objects appeared singly and in 'fleets' and were described variously as 'luminous oval-spherical', 'spinning top', spindle-shaped, and as a sphere emitting 'an intense luminous ray that illuminated the surface of the river'. At Pajas Blancas Airport in Córdoba, a UFO caused operations to be stopped for several minutes after it followed the landing pattern of aircraft into the airport. Sightings occurred around the same time in Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. According to the entry, CUFOS suspected that many of the observations might have been due to a high-altitude barium cloud produced by a rocket launch. The entry cites the IUR/Frontiers of Science of September/October 1980 and James Oberg's 1983 Fate article 'Giant UFO over Two Continents'. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
