Background
At 1:00 a.m. on September 30, 1980, George Blackwell, a farmer near Rosedale, Victoria, Australia, was awakened by a noise and his disturbed livestock. Outside he saw a 24-by-15-foot sphere pass by some 6–9 feet off the ground and 450 feet away; it stopped above a water tank and then settled to the ground. Blackwell rode a motorcycle to the spot and stopped 45 feet from the landed object, which was making a loud whistling sound. After 3 minutes the object emitted a louder noise, gave off a blast of air and moved off to the east. A 30-foot doughnut-shaped ring was found where it had rested, the 10,000-gallon water tank was found drained, and Blackwell experienced health problems the following week.
