Background

sighting

Three Romanian military helicopters flew at low altitude during a nighttime training mission near Buzău. After 10 p.m., Col. Marcel Smoleanu spotted a bright red, silent object roughly 60 feet across to his left, pacing their formation at 93 mph and 328 feet height. Other pilots confirmed the visual.

Maneuver and Disappearance

The sphere matched their speed for about a minute, then surged forward, executed a sharp 90-degree turn, crossed ahead of the helicopters, prompting them to hover. It vanished abruptly, leading to mission cancellation and return to Buzău airfield.

Radar Corroboration

Lt. Col. Doru Drăgoi was briefed in the radar room, where operators displayed over 10 unidentified blips northeast of Buzău, performing erratic paths including 180-degree turns near Săpoca. He personally saw fast-moving bright objects overhead from east to west. (Source: Eberhart, p.1065; Romania 110–113)
