Background

On October 19, 1998, four different radar stations in Hebei province, China, picked up an unknown target moving above a military flight training base near Cangzhou. At least 140 observers at the base saw the object as a small star that grew larger as it descended; it had a mushroom-shaped dome on top, a flat bottom covered with rotating lights and two solid light beams extending a short way from its base. The base commander scrambled a Shenyang J-6 fighter, which came within 2.5 miles of the object over Qing County, whereupon it abruptly shot upward and then appeared and reappeared around the jet. The base commander, Col. Li, denied permission to fire; the fighter had to return when it ran low on fuel, and the object disappeared before other aircraft arrived. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
