On 5 November 2004, the US Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission in Turkmenistan and the USAID Director met with members of a group called the Union of Ufologists, located in Turkmenabat, which had existed since independence in 1992. According to the cable, the group had 'attracted a local brain trust of lawyers, scientists, computer experts, accountants, teacher, and others' interested in the subject. UOU President Ovezberdy Muradov stated that everyone in Turkmenistan was interested in UFOs.
