Background

In August 2020, the US Department of Defense established the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) under the Office of Naval Intelligence to detect, analyze, and catalog UAPs that could pose a threat to military aviation safety.

Origins and Mandate

The creation of the UAPTF followed mounting pressure from Congress, which demanded transparency after the 2017 New York Times revelations and subsequent Navy briefings. The task force was tasked with:

  • Detecting unidentified aerial phenomena
  • Analyzing UAP incidents and data
  • Cataloging threats to military aviation safety

First Official Report

The UAPTF produced the first official UAP report in June 2021, marking a significant milestone in government transparency on the subject.

Succession and Expansion

In 2022, the UAPTF was succeeded by AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) with an expanded mandate. The new organization extended its scope beyond aerial phenomena to cover all domains:

  • Air
  • Sea
  • Space
  • Land

Significance

The establishment of the UAP Task Force marked the first formal acknowledgment by the Department of Defense that unidentified aerial phenomena required dedicated military attention. It signaled a paradigm shift from decades of official dismissal to active investigation within the defense establishment. The task force laid the institutional groundwork for the DNI report and the creation of AARO.
