George F. Gorman

George F. Gorman (1922–1982) was a pilot of the North Dakota Air National Guard at the rank of Second Lieutenant who flew a P-51 Mustang and participated in a cross-country flight with other National Guard pilots. On 1 October 1948, over Fargo, North Dakota, he conducted an aerial pursuit lasting roughly 27 minutes of an unidentified round, blinking luminous object — the event that later entered early UFO history as the "Gorman Dogfight".

For the UAP timeline, Gorman represents one of the earliest well-documented military aerial pursuits of a UAP: several independent witnesses, an experienced National Guardsman at the controls and a ground radar operator — all in the same year as Chiles–Whitted and shortly after Mantell. The case became formative for the work of Project Sign.
