Gordon Cooper

Leroy Gordon “Gordo” Cooper Jr. (1927-2004) was a test pilot, U.S. Air Force officer, and one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts. He flew Mercury-Atlas 9 and commanded Gemini 5. Cooper later repeatedly described UFO observations, including metallic discs during his military service in Germany, and became a prominent public voice for UFO disclosure. For the story, Cooper matters because his spaceflight and test-pilot background gave his statements unusual cultural weight.
