Short overview
Serial 153 of the FBI case file 62-HQ-83894 is a small enclosure from the FBI’s Knoxville office on “flying saucers” observed over the Oak Ridge area, Tennessee, in July 1947, filed under Internal Security.
Why this is interesting
The cover sheet lists the enclosures sent to FBI headquarters: two photographs of reputed “flying saucers” seen at Oak Ridge in July 1947 and a photostatic copy of a clipping from the Knoxville News-Sentinel. The clipping reports that a local resident photographed his family and house and, using the last frame on the roll, pointed the camera at the mountain; the developed picture, the paper writes, showed a flying saucer and was the first one ever photographed over Oak Ridge. The photographs themselves are included as separate pages. The serial shows the FBI in 1947 collecting local press reports and private snapshots from the area around Oak Ridge.
