Background

In the late afternoon William R. Presley, a civilian engineer with the Air Materiel Command (AMC), took a muddy photograph of a ball of fire at 218 Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Eberhart judges it most likely to be a photographic flaw. The case is documented in an FBI Knoxville memo to the FBI Director of 10 January 1949 on flying saucers observed over the Oak Ridge area and in a letter from Col. C. D. Gasser to G. J. Rathman of 10 February 1949, both in the PURSUE release; Eberhart also cites the Hynek UFO Report. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
