Background

After a series of UFO sightings and landing traces was reported in the area around Ibiúna, São Paulo, Brazil, the Brazilian Air Force informed the local officials investigating the reports that they must not "under any circumstances give any information on UFO activity to any press, radio, or television reporter or representative." The Air Force called it a matter of national security and stated that all press releases would be issued by its Public Relations Department. Hans Bemelmans reported the instruction in Flying Saucer Review in early 1970, and the magazine returned to it in 1973 under the heading "Brazil: Censorship of UFO Reports." The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
