The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) should be distinguished from the funded DIA AAWSAP contract. According to James Lacatski, AATIP was created as an unclassified nickname in Senator Harry Reid's June 24, 2009 SAP request letter and was later adopted as a label for a small unofficial DoD effort investigating military UAP encounters. It was not the $22 million funded program; AAWSAP was.
