Short overview
A November 2008 bundle of five short topical papers that the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) prepared for Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS), each page marked “BAASS CONFIDENTIAL”. The papers, credited to the “MUFON Advanced Technology Establishment”, cover lift, power generation, control, the human interface and propulsion.
Why this is interesting
Each paper follows the same pattern: an abstract, technical concepts, a “prospect for research payoff” and a plan of action with small teams and week-by-week milestones. The lift and control papers sketch a spinning superconducting toroid craft that would push against the Earth’s magnetic field, and argue that the near-silent hovering described in UFO reports points away from air-moving technologies. The power paper proposes buying an existing “EDTEK Scanning Reactor” for high-temperature cold-fusion tests, citing about $10K for materials. The human-interface paper treats alleged implants as possible bi-directional communication devices to be removed and studied, and states that MUFON holds X-rays said to show implants in a 16-year-old female and a 76-year-old male. The propulsion paper lists nine characteristics drawn from observations by pilots, military personnel and witnesses and favours research into controlled anti-gravitational fields and superconductors.
Selected passages
- “For UFOs, there are numerous reports of hovering craft. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them make little or no noise other than a humming sound, which suggests they do not move air around to stay afloat”
- “The scientific study of implants found in human beings may lead to technologies which could lead to this giant leap.”
- “Although controversial, it is worth considering whether the properties of unidentified aerial phenomena that have been witnessed over the last 50 years could be explained by any of the current theories for interstellar propulsion.”
Background
This document is an administrative, programmatic, or contractor-produced record related to the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program (AAWSAP), a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)-administered program active from 2008 to 2012. AAWSAP’s official scope of work identified 12 technical research areas relating to potential aerospace threats over a time horizon of more than 40 years. As part of the broader program record, the file documents how AAWSAP was scoped, organized, tasked, funded, executed, or described at a particular point in time. This November 2008 compilation appears to be a set of technical materials prepared by the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) for Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) under a separate supporting contract. The file presents MUFON-produced topical papers framed around AAWSAP’s technical research areas, including at least a paper on “Lift,” while treating historical and contemporary unidentified flying object or unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) reporting as a relevant source base for evaluating advanced aerospace capabilities.
